Library Policies For Students
Visiting the Library
Students must have a blue pass to come to the library during school hours unless they are with a teacher. Study hall students need to follow the pass procedures.
Pass Procedures
Blue library passes are to be used if a student wishes to use the library during a study hall block. Two signatures are necessary in order for the student to be admitted into the library: one from the teacher who assigned the paper, assignment or project and one from the study hall teacher as well. No more than 4 students per study class (or 20% of the total number of students) will be allowed to sign out to the library. Students will remain in the library for the period unless their passes are marked "Return". Students are not permitted to go to their lockers once they
have signed in. When study hall students enter the library, they will put their names under the appropriate study teacher listed on the sign-in sheet. Students with a pass may visit the library during class time to do independent research.
Computers
The library has nine computer stations for students to use that are wired for Internet access. Students are not allowed to play games or write email on the computers.
Books
Books can be checked out of the library for a 2-week period. Overdue notices will be sent out biweekly if books are not returned. If a book is lost or damaged, it will be the student's responsibility to pay for the replacement cost of the book.
Photocopier
There is a photocopier in the library for students to use. Please ask for assistance if it is needed.
Auburn High School Library Collection Policies
Collection Development:
The selection and evaluation of library materials is guided by the collection development policy of the school.
1. Supporting and enriching the curriculum.
2. Supporting personal and recreational needs of the students' collection covering a broad range of subjects.
3. Reflecting quality of content and artistic merit.
4. Reflecting religious, ethnic, social, and economic diversity.
5. Reflecting various points of views, timeliness, permanence, and importance of subject matter reflecting age appropriateness.
6. Reflecting the reputation of author and publisher.
7. Creating a balanced collection covering a broad range of subjects.
Weeding:
The collection of the library will be continually reevaluated in relation to the evolving curriculum, new formats of materials, new instructional methods, and the current needs of its users. Materials no longer appropriate should be removed. Lost and worn materials of lasting value should be replaced. Weeding is essential in maintaining a relevant, attractive collection. Materials considered for weeding should include:
1. In poor physical condition.
2. Containing obsolete subject matter.
3. No longer needed to support the curriculum or student/faculty interests.
4. Superseded by more current information.
5. Containing inaccurate information.
Challenged Materials:
The Auburn High School Library does not endorse particular beliefs or views, nor does the selection of an item express or imply an endorsement of the viewpoint expressed by the author. Library materials will not be marked or identified to show approval or disapproval of the contents, nor will items be sequestered, except for the purpose of protecting them from theft or damage.
There may be occasions when an Auburn community member may be concerned about a particular item in the AHS Library's collection. If the member wishes the AHS Library to reconsider material that is in the collection, a Request for Reconsideration form is available in the library. Once the form is completed and received, the Librarian will form a committee of administrators and teachers who will meet to review the Statement, as well as the criteria used in selecting the item, its place in the collection, and reasons for including the item in the collection. A decision will be made in a timely fashion, and the member who initiated the request will be notified.
